The First Decision

Engineered or solid wood: which fits here?

In most local homes, engineered wood wins: it handles slab-on-grade construction and our dry climate better, and modern wear layers still allow refinishing. Solid hardwood makes sense over wood subfloors and for owners who want the maximum number of refinishes in the bank over the decades. Around here that mostly means the custom builds out in La Cresta and the Temecula Wine Country; the production neighborhoods sit on slab, where engineered is the honest recommendation.

Sun matters here too. Rooms with big west-facing glass will fade and cycle any wood floor harder, so species, finish, and even plank placement are worth talking through before you buy material. It's the kind of conversation we have every week on flooring projects in Temecula and Murrieta.

Done Right, In Order

What does wood floor installation involve?

Four stages, in order: acclimation, so the planks adjust to your home's humidity before they're locked down; moisture testing and subfloor preparation, because wood telegraphs every flaw beneath it; installation, glued, nailed, or floated to suit the product and the subfloor; and sanding and finishing on site where the floor calls for it.

Skipping the first two stages is how floors gap, cup, and squeak a year later. We don't skip them.

Straight Answers

What drives wood flooring cost?

The species and grade of the wood, the area you're covering, the condition of the subfloor, and the finish work: stairs, transitions, and baseboards move the number more than most people expect. Engineered and solid products also price differently for the same look.

There's no honest flat number, and that's exactly why our estimates are free: we measure, talk through materials, and give you a detailed, no-pressure quote so you know precisely what you're paying for.

“Mikey did our countertops, stairs, and flooring, and we couldn’t be happier. When we moved into our house, our espresso wood flooring had been discontinued. Somehow, they found a perfect match—you can’t even tell where the old floor ends and the new one begins. Their attention to detail is incredible. Professional, on time, and the quality of their work is outstanding.”

Common Questions

Wood flooring FAQ.

Can you install wood flooring over a concrete slab?

Yes. Most homes here sit on a slab, and engineered wood over a properly prepped, moisture-tested slab is everyday work for us. Solid hardwood needs a wood subfloor or sleeper system underneath, and we'll tell you honestly which route your home supports.

Can you match existing wood flooring?

Often, yes. If the product is still made we source it; if it's discontinued we hunt down the closest match. One customer moved into a home with discontinued espresso wood flooring, and the match we found made it impossible to tell where the old floor ends and the new one begins.

Do you sand and finish floors on site?

Yes. Where the product calls for it, we install, sand, and finish on site rather than relying only on prefinished planks. Site finishing gives a flatter, more continuous surface and lets you tune the sheen and stain to your home instead of a factory default.
