Why floor prep decides how your floor turns out.
Because every finished floor telegraphs the slab underneath it. Humps become lippage in tile and clicking seams in LVP; dips become hollow spots and cracked corners. Prep is where those problems get solved, before they're expensive: which is why it's a first-class service for us, not a line we rush past.
It matters most where the finished floor is least forgiving: large-format tile in Palm Desert demands genuine slab flatness, and it's the same story under the LVP and vinyl plank and tile floors we install every week, including plenty of concrete slab prep in Menifee, where the mid-century slabs out in Sun City have had sixty years to settle.
What is concrete sanding and grinding?
Mechanically taking the slab down to a clean, even, open surface: knocking down high spots, removing old adhesives and coatings, and evening out trowel marks. It's the make-or-break step before a stained-concrete floor, where every flaw you leave gets locked under the finish, and the standard prep before tile or plank goes down.
One customer needed his slab cleaned and sanded for a staining project and didn't have the tools or the know-how to get the look he wanted; we sanded and evened out the slab, and in his words, it turned out great.
When do you need self-leveling?
When the slab's low spots are too deep to grind the rest of the floor down to. Self-leveling underlayment gets poured to fill dips and bring the whole surface to one plane: the right call for wavy slabs, patched trenches, and additions that never quite matched the original pour.
Grinding, filling, or a full pour: we measure the slab and recommend the cheapest path to actually flat, not the most impressive one. The estimate is free either way.

Can you prep a concrete slab for staining?
Yes. Staining is the most demanding prep there is, because the slab itself becomes the finished floor. We sand and even out the surface, clean it to an open, uniform face, and leave it ready to take stain evenly, edge to edge.
Do I really need floor prep before LVP or tile?
Almost always, at least some. Flatness standards for tile and rigid plank are tighter than most slabs are poured, and the fix costs far less before the floor goes down than after it fails. We check the slab as part of every flooring estimate and price only the prep it actually needs.
What does floor prep or concrete sanding cost?
It depends on the slab's condition, the area, and whether grinding alone gets it flat or low spots need filling. There's no honest flat number. That's exactly why our estimates are free: we measure the slab and give you a detailed, no-pressure quote.
